I feel like I’m writing a news about news story, but apparently Guillermo del Toro will know if he’ll be directing ‘The Hobbit’ next week. Del Toro, who recently made ‘Pan’s Labyrinth,’ said this at a panel for his new movie ‘Hellboy 2.’
‘The Hobbit’ is currently set for release in 2010. It is produced by Peter Jackson and takes place before the story of ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ In the story we follow Bilbo Baggins, who goes on his first adventure.
It was originally written as a story for children, so it will be particularly interesting to see what Del Toro will do with the story if he gets the chance.

High hopes for ‘Street Kings’ at the overseas box office. The $20 million production made a little under $13 million in its opening weekend in the US and is now released in 27 countries outside the US.
‘Horton Hears a Who!’ is still doing well overseas, now at $108 million. Meanwhile ‘10,000 BC’ didn’t flop as bad there as it did in the US, making $160 million.
‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ will be rolled out slowly in other countries, only opening in Australia this week. Released the last in Argentina September 4, the movie will simply be called ‘Dumped’ in some countries. But Germany gets the crown title. The movie will be known there as ‘Nie wieder Sex mit der Ex.’

Alexandre Aja was quite surprised when his new horror ‘Mirrors’ with Kiefer Sutherland didn’t get chopped up by the MPAA. Aja, who previously directed ‘The Hills Have Eyes,’ said “I’m still in shock of what they let us keep. We made the movie we wanted and I won’t even have enough footage for an unrated cut [on DVD].”
Rated R (not under 17 without a parent), Aja thinks the MPAA went easy on them because of the supernatural theme. But while there is no raping by mutants like his last movie, he does grinningly mention they “do have a reflection of a mother cutting the throat of her 12-year-old little girl and that hasn’t been a problem [with the MPAA] either.”
‘Mirrors’ will hit the theaters August 15 this year. For the full interview, check the link below.
