Coming this summer: Hollywood Strike 2

April 30th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

Actors' Strike It's ON!

So the rumors were true, the Screen Actors Guild’s (SAG) negotiations with the studios are really going nowhere. The studios just slammed the SAG by saying they are being ‘unresponsive, unreasonable and unrealistic.’ You’re not making a public statement like that when there are deals lying ready on the table.

Although both parties have spent considerable time in the negotiating room, we are not yet close to an agreement,” the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers (AMPTP) said. Basically they say the SGA doesn’t want to follow the pattern the Directors and Writers Guild of America set earlier. One of the main disputes is still the compensation for DVD sales, which the SAG wants to double. But the AMPTP isn’t ready to give in, since it will naturally cost them major revenue.

The SGA’s current contract expires June 30, after which the second strike this year could follow.

Illegal downloaders love going to the movies

Pirates Love Theater

In a speech at the National Press Club, Motion Picture Association of America president Dan Glickman said the movie industry had to adjust to the current ‘tech-savvy generation.’ The MPAA actually realized the people downloading movies still go to the theater in much greater numbers than the average consumer.

While he felt that regulation is still needed, he said, “We also know that consumers increasingly want to enjoy our films in new ways. We have to give folks the choices they desire — legally — in the comfort of their homes and wherever else they wish to enjoy our movies.

Basically admitting legal downloading always was and still isn’t where it has to be to satisfy consumers. “There are technology and policy issues to work through. [...] I think we’ll soon see some progress that will really open up how exciting this future could be for all of us,” Glickman said.

After that, he lightly touched upon net neutrality. The MPAA is still in favor of regulating internet usage, but he said “laws of unintended consequences are always applicable. We need to be extremely cautious before going down this road.

Buy DreamWorks stock before it’s too late!

DreamWorks Stock Green

After better than expected DreamWorks earnings yesterday, Wedbush Morgan has upped their advice for DreamWorks stock from ‘Hold’ to ‘Buy.’ After the earnings yesterday and the Wedbush Morgan statement earlier, the DreamWorks Animation stock jumped over 8.5%.

So it might actually be a little too late to buy them, since the jump already took place. But since the stock market is currently recovering and DreamWorks is looking at a bright future, it might not be such a bad investment after all.
