Simultaneous iTunes and DVD release

Itunes DVD Date

Apple stock jumped over 2% when the company announced they are going to release movies simultaneous with their physical counterpart DVD. Normally the iTunes store would have to wait over a month to get a new movie in, but most Hollywood studios are now releasing their babies right onto the net.

The news comes just days after the MPAA stated the industry was too slow with adjusting to their ‘tech-savvy’ crowd. The time has come for Hollywood to embrace digital distribution. “This is a really good example of how they are moving more quickly toward it and we think Apple is best-positioned (to benefit),” said analyst Shannon Cross of Cross Research.

A iTunes movie will only set you back between $9.99 and $14.99, which isn’t as overprices as you would expect. Not at all. The major drawback however, still seems the limited playback capability of all digital downloads. In this case mostly restricted to Apple hardware. When will we see an universal format we can play and keep forever?

Polanski docu picked up for distribution

Roman Polanski

In 1978, director Roman Polanski fled from the US after pleading guilty to statutory rape of a thirteen year old girl. And this is what he will be remembered for, not for his movies. ThinkFilm wants to take a deeper look at this story and has picked up the documentary ‘Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired.’

The documentary focuses on the trial and Polanski’s fleeing and got a lot of positive feedback at the Sundance Film Festival. It even had a little run for an Oscar. The president of ThinkFilm, Mark Urman, worked with Polanski for 6 years during the nineties and helped creating the movie.

ThinkFilm will release ‘Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired’ in theaters July 11 and on DVD late fall.

‘Speed Racer’ tracking indicates miserable opening

Speed Racer Knifed

Warner Bros better get that ‘Speed Racer’ marketing campaign into action, because the $100 million Wachowski Brothers movie is set for an opening at $35 million max next week. The family picture is currently tracking behind ‘Prince Caspian,’ the new Narnia movie, which is even releasing a week later.

‘Un-Aided Awareness’ for ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian’ is 9%, while ‘Speed Racer’ does 8% just a week before its release. ‘Definite Interest’ is 44% for Narnia and 32% for ‘Speed Racer.’ And lastly, ‘First Choice’ is 17% for Narnia, with just 4% for ‘Speed Racer.’

I may not be the target audience for this Warner Bros blockbuster, but I have to agree with the tracking numbers. The trailer didn’t get me into this movie at all. It looks like they wanted to make a ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ racer, but without the fun.
