Early ‘Sex and the City’ tracking numbers

Sex and the City What?

The first ‘Sex and the City: The Movie’ tracking numbers are in and they’re painting a mixed picture. I can’t remember the last movie that had this much buzz among the ladies. And I don’t recall girls paying thousands of dollars for a ticket to see ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ in 2006 either. But early tracking numbers are indicating a $30 million opening for ‘Sex and the City: The Movie,’ compared to a $27.53 million opening for ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’

It seems like a rather low number for the movie that was leading a poll by Moviefone with over 400,000 respondents. It beat last weekend’s ‘Indiana Jones 4′ by 1%, with 32% looking forward to see the TV series hit the big screen. But the numbers aren’t indicating the $100 million weekend Indy 4 had.

Un-Aided Awareness: 14% among women
Definite Interest: 41% among women 25 plus
Definite Interest: 36% among women under 25
Overall First Choice: 9%
Overall First Choice: 17% among women
Overall First Choice: 30% among 25-34-year-old women

To compare the numbers to ‘Indiana Jones 4′ and ‘Prince Caspian,’ you can go here. But we know the numbers didn’t paint the whole picture last weeks. With several pictures deviating from the tracking numbers. And since the industry is more used to tracking young boys, I’m not sure we can take these numbers too serious.

Yahoo News also questions if women alone can make ‘Sex and the City’ a hit. “We can’t remember the last time a movie has created so much anticipation among female moviegoers from their 20s through their 40s,” a Fandango spokesman said. But the R-rating might affect its numbers. “This movie really will be a paternity test for R-rated female-driven romantic comedies,” one analyst noted. “There haven’t been a lot of movies like this.

I have the feeling this movie can surprise quite some analysts this weekend. But we’ll see soon enough.
