As always, we have the upcoming movies in quotes for you. This week we can choose between the pink ‘Sex and the City: The Movie’ and the pitch black ‘The Strangers.’ Or we could just go with an oldie, like ‘Indiana Jones 4.’ The critics were quite mild this week. Although ‘Sex and the City’ didn’t pass the test, with a Metacritic score of 5.4. Even beaten by ‘The Strangers,’ which scored 0.1 higher, a 5.5. Hit the jump to see what those grumpy critics had to say.
The Strangers
The Hollywood Reporter (8.0): “A spare, creepily atmospheric psychological thriller with a death grip on the psychological aspect.“
Austin Chronicle (6.7): “Younger viewers who’ve cut their teeth on the instant horrors of modern “torture porn” may find The Stranger’s pace and psychological upsets more slow-going than they might like. Yet a film like this may be just the bracing corrective the modern horror film needs.“
Washington Post (2.0): “I like watching snakes eat mice just as much as the next fella, maybe even more, but The Strangers turns the gobble-’em-up into an ordeal. It’s a fraud from start to finish.“
Sex and the City: The Movie
Chicago Tribune (8.8): “Michael Patrick King’s screenplay hits all the right notes, building on the warmth and familiarity of the series (which King also wrote).“
Empire (6.0): “If you are immune to the charms of Carrie and co., this will do little to convert you. Still, it has more than enough sass, style and sentiment to keep the faithful satisfied. Add a star if you’re a fan.“
The Globe and Mail (0.0): “Bad summer films, full of furious hype and signifying nothing, are hardly exceptional these days, nor is the sound they typically make: the dull scrape of a culture hitting rock bottom. Yet this one seems uniquely bad; this one is a threshold-breaker with a different sound, the crack of rock-bottom giving way to a whole deeper layer of magma.“
‘Sex and the City: The Movie’ seems to be worth it if you liked the series. In my case, not so much, but probably perfect for 90% of the opposite sex. ‘The Strangers’ sounds like a hit or miss. A quite long and more traditional horror. And you could of course also check out one of the previous box office stars. ‘Indiana Jones 4,’ ‘Iron Man’ or even ‘Prince Caspian.’
