The delayed last week’s box office roundup

I’ve been staying at a no-internet zone for a couple of days, so I’m sorry for the slightly lower update frequency. This also caused the delayed roundup, but it’s an interesting one nonetheless.
1. The Incredible Hulk: $74,919,370 ($150 million budget)
2. Kung Fu Panda: $50,218,801 ($130 million budget, second week)
3. The Happening: $40,267,349 ($57 million budget)

So what’s interesting about the week’s box office. Well, for one, the critically failed ‘The Happening’ took the number one spot in terms of gross percentage compared to its budget. The thriller made a very good 70% of its budget during the week, while ‘The Incredible Hulk’ only managed to take 50% of its $150 million budget. If you add marketing costs, this Marvel movie will certainly need its overseas box office gross to become profitable. While ‘Iron Man’ can easily make money with the +$300 million in the US alone.
‘Kung Fu Panda’ had a good second week. The animation had a slight drop compared to last week and made another 39% of its budget. As you can see, ‘The Happening’ was front-loaded and dropped off after Friday. Meanwhile, ‘Kung Fu Panda’ went up and stayed second during the week. ‘Kung Fu Panda’ now has a domestic total of $134 million, topping its budget within two weeks.
Even more interesting is the decreasing line of ‘The Incredible Hulk,’ while ‘Kung Fu Panda’ is 100% steady. With a difference of just a couple of thousand, ‘Kung Fu Panda’ almost made the number one spot last Thursday. Which isn’t a good sign for ‘The Incredible Hulk.’ It went downwards from the start. And because we are posting this later than usual, we can see this trend going into the weekend. Compared to last weekend, ‘The Incredible Hulk’ took a steep drop of over 70% last Friday.
It’s only because the newly released movies aren’t doing so well. Else, ‘The Incredible Hulk’ would be out pretty soon.
