Tommy Lee Jones Islands in the Stream

Tommy Lee Jones is serious about his directing career. Actually, he is serious about all his careers. After his fairly successful ‘The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada,’ he is now going to direct, produce and star in a new Ernest Hemingway adaptation. He even co-wrote the ‘Islands in the Stream’ script.

‘Islands in the Stream’ was previously adapted by Franklin J. Schaffner in 1977 and got nominated for one Oscar. This time the movie will have a $30 million budget and both Morgan Freeman and John Goodman are in talks to be part of the cast. Shooting starts in Puerto Rico, although not earlier than March 2009.

Directors: Takashi Miike does ‘Crows Zero’ sequel

Takashi Miike Crows Zero 2

Maybe you didn’t notice, but he just looked at you. Takashi Miike is not described as the fastest guy in Asian cinema for nothing. IMDB shows he has made a whopping 76 movies in just 18 years.

Miike will direct the sequel to his ‘Crows Zero,’ which has been out of the theaters for just a couple of months and didn’t even hit western theaters yet. The (not surprisingly) yakuza movie made over $24 million at the Japanese box office last year and the sequel has been green lit to begin production in July. Shun Oguri has also been signed again to star in ‘Crows Zero 2.’

Takashi Miike got his cult following outside Japan because of his gory ‘Ichi the Killer’ and ‘Audition.’ Some of his movies did better overseas than in Japan alone.

‘Crows Zero’ got picked up for a US release by Media Blasters last year, but no date has been set.

Jan De Bont Point Break 2

Another news bit from pre-Cannes. Action director Jan De Bont has taken it upon himself to shoot the sequel to ‘Point Break,’ which came out in 1991.

‘Point Break: Indo’ will take place 20 years after the original surfer crime movie. Involvement of Patrick Swayze or Keanu Reeves wasn’t announced. Why they want to make a sequel to this long forgotten movie wasn’t announced either.
