New photos: ‘Back to the Future’

June 4th, 2008 at 1:33 pm

These shots aren’t new. Not even in the sense they just hit the net. But let’s take a fun trip ‘Back to the Future,’ to the set of 1985. This is when ‘misterbiscuit’ took a job as a security guard at Universal Studios to be on the set of ‘Back to the Future.’

While the first movie was a big hit in 1985, the other two weren’t as big as you would expect. The first made $210 million, the second $118 and the third $88 million. Worldwide they respectively did $380 million, $330 million and $244 million. Still profitable, but I reckon the DVD and VHS sales were responsible for a big part of the third movies’ revenue.

The second row of pictures compares the set of 1985 to the one set in 1955.

‘Sex and the City’ keeps grip on box office

June 4th, 2008 at 8:34 am

Sarah Jessica Parker Muscles

As I left you with the last ‘Sex and the City’ box office numbers, I just had to come back with another classic Sarah Jessica Parker photo (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). As you might know by now, ‘Sex’ made $57 million this weekend, beating most expectations. The first number, $27 million last Friday, indicated an even better opening. But the movie was front-loaded, meaning most women went to the TV series follow-up the first day. Still, $57 million is impressive for a budget of just $65 million.

But while the movie was ‘front-loaded,’ it doesn’t mean the theaters are empty by now. ‘Sex’ made another $5.5 million this Monday, showing its potential staying power. It beat the old ‘Indiana Jones 4′ by $2 million. Not bad for a movie that some deemed as ‘just another chick flick.’ Overseas the movie managed to take another $37.5 million. Not bad either, since the movie has yet to launch in over half of its territories. Especially the U.K. was hyped for ‘Sex and the City,’ with $17.3 million at just 460 screens.

Years of TV made this one pink movie no woman can miss out on. Early Tuesday estimates indicate another $5.5 million. These girls will be around for a while.

‘Sex’ and ‘Strangers’ surprise

Sex and the City London

No, even I didn’t see this one coming. Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema are reporting ‘Sex and the City’ grossed $26.9 million yesterday (Friday). I’ve been very optimistic about Sex’ performance, but I never thought it would have a shot at $70 million for the weekend. Meanwhile, ‘Indiana Jones 4′ is doing a little less than expected, just like we saw in our weekly box office roundup. Spielberg’s oldie took in $12.2 million, meaning it would come in at a little over $40 million for the weekend. But when I said ‘Sex and the City’ could beat Indy, I didn’t think it would actually happen.

The other new release, ‘The Strangers,’ surprised as well. The cheap $10 million thriller made an impressive $7.5 million. Universal must have seen the potential hole it could fill between Sex and Indy. The Liv Tyler vehicle has a shot at $25 million for the weekend.

Lastly, the switch has finally happened. ‘Iron Man’ took $3.7 million, while ‘Prince Caspian’ came no further than $3.4 million. Sorry Disney, your $200 million pet is on its way out.

More numbers as they come in.
