Already past the stage of rising star, Judd Apatow took home a Visionary Award at The Hollywood Reporter’s Key Art Awards last week. If you don’t know the guy, you don’t know fun or it’s just because he’s always behind the scenes. Apatow is responsible for billions in revenue from movies like ‘The 40 Year Old Virgin,’ ‘Knocked Up,’ ‘Superbad’ and ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall.’
He also produced ‘Pineapple Express,’ which comes out August 6.

Some of these shots might look like paparazzi photos, but I don’t think Jason Segel wears a pair of Uggs in real life. Or maybe he does? The pictures were taken by jcollesano at Venice Beach. ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ star Jason Segel was there to film his new comedy ‘I Love You, Man.’ He co-stars with Paul Rudd, who also had a small role as Chuck in ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall.’
The movie is produced, written and directed by John Hamburg, who previously made Ben Stiller’s ‘Along Came Polly’ and co-wrote ‘Meet the Fockers.’ ‘I Love You, Man’ is currently planned for January next year.

I will refrain myself from using the word ‘crash’ in this post, but I think you know where I’m going with this. ‘Speed Racer’ didn’t manage to pick up speed. ‘Speed Racer’ wasn’t fast enough. ‘Speed Racer’ passed by ‘Iron Man.’
In short, ‘Speed Racer’ just didn’t meet Warner Bros’ expectations, only making $20.2 million this weekend. That’s only a couple of visitors more than what ‘What Happens in Vegas’ did, with $20 million. But the word is, Warner Bros. even upped this low number to get in second instead of third. That would of course have made the failure even more embarrassing, because ‘What Happens in Vegas’ only cost $35 million and ‘Speed Racer’ budget estimates range from $100 to $185 million.

Ok, ‘Iron Man’ had an amazing weekend, but how hard was the usual drop after the weekend. Was it a bad one or was it a drop with potential? This is what the two new released movies did in and after the weekend:
‘Iron Man’:
Saturday and Sunday: $63,384,307 million
Monday and Tuesday: $13,440,352 million
Drop: 78.8%
‘Made of Honor’:
Saturday and Sunday: $9,201,889 million
Monday and Tuesday: $1,942,357 million
Drop: 78.9%

Taking a little preview of what’s to come at our weekly box office roundup, here’s what happened this weekend. If you’ve been reading the site, you definitely know about ‘Iron Man’ crushing its competition. So let’s not talk about that. But if we take a look at number two, we see ‘Made of Honor’ still made a decent $15.5 million. I say decent, because with a $40 million budget, Columbia Pictures can’t be too happy about it. A metacritic.com score of 3.7 didn’t help and probably got some girls to join their boyfriend to see ‘Iron Man’ instead.
Others may have chosen to see ‘Baby Mama,’ which was received a little better by the critics last week. It made another $10 million this weekend, making it profitable if you don’t consider marketing.
We already saw how ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ was going to have better legs in our weekly box office roundup. And it managed to top ‘Harold & Kumar 2′ in its third weekend, with a big $6 million. ‘Harold & Kumar 2′ is probably having its last good week, also doing $6 million. Not that New Line Cinema should be sad about it. The movie already did twice their budget of $12 million and is tracking to do double of what its prequel did.
May 2nd, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Baby Mama: $21,997,470 ($30 million budget)
Harold & Kumar 2: $19,254,964 ($12 million budget)
Forgetting Sarah Marshall: $14,609,525 ($30 million budget, second week)

We’re back with our weekly box office roundup. Who won? It depends on how you see it. ‘Baby Mama’ did $3 million more than ‘Harold & Kumar 2,’ but only managed to make 73% of its budget. ‘Harold & Kumar 2′ however, made 160% (!) of its costs. Making it profitable in its first week, not considering any marketing costs.
We can clearly see how ‘Harold & Kumar 2′ took a dive after its launch though, so I wouldn’t expect it to have as much legs as ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ has. We already noted it last week, when ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ slowly took over from ‘The Forbidden Kingdom,’ and this week proves Marshall will stick around a little longer. It still made 50% of its budget, while Kumar is probably not making next week’s top 3.
‘The Forbidden Kingdom’ is slowly getting out too. It made $550,000 on Thursday and isn’t expected to do much next week.
So let’s see what the first weeks of summer box office violence will bring, starting with ‘Iron Man’ next week. From then on, all hell will break loose!

The somewhat controversial ‘Three and Out’ we reported on last week, failed to make any impact at the UK’s box office. The $8 million movie, which sparked controversy because of its rather strange subject, only managed to make £189,454 ($375,000) in its opening weekend. Which ranks it no higher than the 12th place.
The comedy got some negative attention last week for its macabre subject. The movie is based on the fictional rule that if you kill three people in a month as a train driver, you get to leave with a 10 year pension. Needless to say, nobody got excited about that story.
‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ took the first spot with $4.1 million. Check this post for more on the overseas box office last weekend.
