Why ‘Prince Caspian’ still didn’t visit Europe, a look at the overseas box office

Prince Caspian Ball

Taking a look at the overseas box office, we see ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian’ doing well in its current territories. But Caspian’s rollout is spanning over two months, which seems old-fashioned for such a big movie.

Paramount released ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Indiana Jones 4′ simultaneous, why can’t Disney do the same? Well, while you can question why it didn’t release in Europe in May, Disney isn’t releasing ‘Prince Caspian’ there in June for a simple reason; the European Soccer Championship. A family movie wouldn’t stand a chance against the big event in Europe and that’s why Disney delayed it until July.

In the couple of territories it’s in, Caspian already took $80 million. But the fantasy will release in most Asian territories this week, with countries like the U.K., France and Germany following in July. A little earlier in the U.K. and France, because Disney probably doesn’t expect them to make the Soccer Championship’s finals — just kidding guys (if you come from one of these countries).

Tom Cruise does another ‘Valkyrie’ shoot

Tom Cruise Valkyrie reshoot

One year after ‘Valkyrie’ began production, Tom Cruise is back in the ring to shoot the final three scenes of the movie. And while it has mostly been gloom and doom for the new United Artists movie, the people that saw director Bryan ‘X-Men’ Singer’s new movie claim it is actually worth your while. “Bryan Singer is back in form,” one said.

Cruise won’t be shooting in Germany this time, but in North Africa. Cheap labor? I don’t know. But I’d understand why they wouldn’t want to go back to Germany.

It will be interesting to see how the movie does after all the negative press and Tom Cruise and United Artists’ latest flop ‘Lions for Lambs.’ Not to mention the budget, which is now rumored to top $100 million. And will Weinstein Co. release that other ‘Valkyrie’ in February 2009 too?

Friday ‘Sex and the City’ box office bonanza

Sarah Jessica Parker Nice

There might be an overdoses ‘Sex and the City’ coming out for men this weekend, depending on if the movie keeps up the numbers. O, how I hate to be right. I knew the analysts were underestimating the power of those movie-hungry women. Variety reports the chick flick is set for an estimated $20 million opening day. Beating even my overly optimistic expectations. This includes the early Thursday shows past midnight, which were mostly sold out. Yes, these numbers justify all the awesome Sarah Jessica Parker faces (1, 2, 3, 4).

It could even be possible for the movie to really beat ‘Indiana Jones 4′ in its second weekend. With a $20 million opening, anything is possible. Since the ‘Sex and the City’ movie can’t be put into a box easily, the industry’s projections are all over the place. Some expect it to keep up during the weekend, while others say the numbers will drop after the early adopters saw the movie this Friday. I’m expecting the ladies to keep dropping in with big numbers during the whole weekend.

Reuters is currently reporting $12 million in pink tickets overseas. $7 million in the U.K., $3 million in Germany and $1.3 million in France. Are the creators already penning a sequel?
