Bollywood interested in DreamWorks

DreamWorks India

We should’ve seen this one coming. ‘Bollywood coming to Hollywood‘ + ‘Spielberg wants to reinvent DreamWorks‘  = this post? Apparently DreamWorks’ Steven Spielberg, David Geffen and Jeffrey Katzenberg are in talks with the Indian Reliance Group to invest in their studio.

The big three have been discontent with the Paramount deal for a long time and have been talking to several competing parties. Now it seems like Spielberg and co. will get $500-$600 million from Reliance to become independent yet again.

DreamWorks’ parting from Paramount is pretty much confirmed by now and both don’t seem to mind (at all). But will they really end up in Indian arms? And start the injection of Indian movie capital into Hollywood while the US studios are keeping the money in their pockets?

Hollywood puts health into movies
May 29th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Hollywood Health

Over 500 Hollywood producers and writers will work together with the AARP to bring attention to affordable health care. The announcement comes in conjunction with the ‘Divided We Fail’ campaign. The film industry agreed to include several story lines about the health care message in their movies and TV shows.

[People] are putting their money into day-to-day survival. We started thinking what was really important was to reach out through popular culture. There’s nothing more effective,” AARP president Nancy LeaMond said. And since there are 49 million Americans without health insurance, the Motion Picture & Television Fund (MPTF) joined to help the good cause.

The filmmakers, the storytellers, are the ones who are going to make this happen. They know how to entertain and enlighten at the same time,” MPFT chairman and DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said. “Television, like it or not, teaches people. Writers are speaking to millions of people. Any forum that brings these issues to the forefront is both welcome and needed.

It’s good to see it’s not all money in Hollywood.

Doesn’t that make you dizzy? It’s the word in Hollywood these days: 3-D. Just yesterday we talked about how ‘Dawn of the Dead’ was getting a 3-D remake and now Regal Cinemas is announcing to upgrade 1,500 screens to display 3-D. The movie chain is certainly busy with new technology. Two weeks ago they announced their renewed support for IMAX.

RealD will provide the technology, bringing the total to more than 3,500 RealD screens. With about 25% of Regal Cinemas’ screens being able to display the 3-D pictures. Hopefully this brings Jeffrey Katzenberg a little closer to his goal for the ‘Monsters vs. Aliens‘ movie.
