Friday ‘Sex and the City’ box office bonanzaMay 30th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

There might be an overdoses ‘Sex and the City’ coming out for men this weekend, depending on if the movie keeps up the numbers. O, how I hate to be right. I knew the analysts were underestimating the power of those movie-hungry women. Variety reports the chick flick is set for an estimated $20 million opening day. Beating even my overly optimistic expectations. This includes the early Thursday shows past midnight, which were mostly sold out. Yes, these numbers justify all the awesome Sarah Jessica Parker faces (1, 2, 3, 4).
It could even be possible for the movie to really beat ‘Indiana Jones 4′ in its second weekend. With a $20 million opening, anything is possible. Since the ‘Sex and the City’ movie can’t be put into a box easily, the industry’s projections are all over the place. Some expect it to keep up during the weekend, while others say the numbers will drop after the early adopters saw the movie this Friday. I’m expecting the ladies to keep dropping in with big numbers during the whole weekend.
Reuters is currently reporting $12 million in pink tickets overseas. $7 million in the U.K., $3 million in Germany and $1.3 million in France. Are the creators already penning a sequel?

UK’s cinemas turn pink for ‘Sex and the City’May 28th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

The box office weekend starts so soon when you have a Memorial Day and the overseas market opening early. Just yesterday we posted the US tracking numbers and now the actual numbers are beginning to roll in. ‘Sex and the City: The Movie’ is starting off well overseas. Pink lady nights brought in $4 million in the U.K. at just 460 screens. If we do the math, that’s a whopping $8700 per screen on a week day. Was my buzz-meter right this time? Is it really going to beat all expectations?
France was a little less excited, with a decent $800,000 at 540 screens. But will the ladies in the U.S. be just as hyped as the ones in the U.K., where the movie premiered last week. Or will the mediocre reviews affect the box office numbers.
I personally don’t think the target audience will check a lot of review, but we’ll know in a couple of days. ‘Sex and the City’ won’t be out in the U.S. until Friday.
Early ‘Sex and the City’ tracking numbersMay 27th, 2008 at 12:14 pm

The first ‘Sex and the City: The Movie’ tracking numbers are in and they’re painting a mixed picture. I can’t remember the last movie that had this much buzz among the ladies. And I don’t recall girls paying thousands of dollars for a ticket to see ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ in 2006 either. But early tracking numbers are indicating a $30 million opening for ‘Sex and the City: The Movie,’ compared to a $27.53 million opening for ‘The Devil Wears Prada.’
It seems like a rather low number for the movie that was leading a poll by Moviefone with over 400,000 respondents. It beat last weekend’s ‘Indiana Jones 4′ by 1%, with 32% looking forward to see the TV series hit the big screen. But the numbers aren’t indicating the $100 million weekend Indy 4 had.
