‘Sex and the City’ keeps grip on box officeJune 4th, 2008 at 8:34 am

As I left you with the last ‘Sex and the City’ box office numbers, I just had to come back with another classic Sarah Jessica Parker photo (1, 2, 3, 4, 5). As you might know by now, ‘Sex’ made $57 million this weekend, beating most expectations. The first number, $27 million last Friday, indicated an even better opening. But the movie was front-loaded, meaning most women went to the TV series follow-up the first day. Still, $57 million is impressive for a budget of just $65 million.
But while the movie was ‘front-loaded,’ it doesn’t mean the theaters are empty by now. ‘Sex’ made another $5.5 million this Monday, showing its potential staying power. It beat the old ‘Indiana Jones 4′ by $2 million. Not bad for a movie that some deemed as ‘just another chick flick.’ Overseas the movie managed to take another $37.5 million. Not bad either, since the movie has yet to launch in over half of its territories. Especially the U.K. was hyped for ‘Sex and the City,’ with $17.3 million at just 460 screens.
Years of TV made this one pink movie no woman can miss out on. Early Tuesday estimates indicate another $5.5 million. These girls will be around for a while.
Friday ‘Sex and the City’ box office bonanzaMay 30th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

There might be an overdoses ‘Sex and the City’ coming out for men this weekend, depending on if the movie keeps up the numbers. O, how I hate to be right. I knew the analysts were underestimating the power of those movie-hungry women. Variety reports the chick flick is set for an estimated $20 million opening day. Beating even my overly optimistic expectations. This includes the early Thursday shows past midnight, which were mostly sold out. Yes, these numbers justify all the awesome Sarah Jessica Parker faces (1, 2, 3, 4).
It could even be possible for the movie to really beat ‘Indiana Jones 4′ in its second weekend. With a $20 million opening, anything is possible. Since the ‘Sex and the City’ movie can’t be put into a box easily, the industry’s projections are all over the place. Some expect it to keep up during the weekend, while others say the numbers will drop after the early adopters saw the movie this Friday. I’m expecting the ladies to keep dropping in with big numbers during the whole weekend.
Reuters is currently reporting $12 million in pink tickets overseas. $7 million in the U.K., $3 million in Germany and $1.3 million in France. Are the creators already penning a sequel?

‘Prince Caspian,’ the box office storyMay 27th, 2008 at 9:25 pm

‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian’ was left in the cold this weekend. Indy 4 got all the fame and only a couple of people got lost and went to ‘Prince Caspian’ by accident. It all started with a disappointing opening last weekend. The Disney picture only made $55 million, while everybody expected a bigger opening for the $200 million fantasy project. And how much did last weekend bring in for Aslan and his gang? Less than $23 million, a drop of almost 60%.
