 | | Sacha Baron Cohen will join ‘Angels & Demons’ to kick off the 2009 summer blockbuster season. The comedian, famous for ‘Borat’ and ‘Ali G,’ will release his new movie ‘Bruno’ May 15, 2009.
The $42 million picture is set to become the comedy of next year, if Fox will market the movie as hard as it did with ‘Borat.’ The $18 million ‘Borat’ made $261 million worldwide in 2006, of which half in the US.
Although I’m sure the comedy will get some stiff competition from Sony’s marketing department. Like all the ‘Spider-Man’ movies and ‘The Da Vinci Code,’ ‘Angels & Demons’ will be one of the most heavily marketed movies of 2009. Jeff Blake will make sure it will.

To fill up the slow gaps in theaters during the week, Sony’s Hot Ticket will start providing different digital content to theater chains. Soon you will not only be able to go to your favorite movie, but also see a concert, a play or some sporting event. “In the beginning this business is not going to be a huge moneymaker, but this is a long-term play,” Sony’s Rory Bruer said.
Some chains have tried similar initiatives to fill theaters during their slow periods. Theaters in Europe tried showing big soccer games during the summer. And The Metropolitan Opera recently started transmitting their operas in HD live to theaters worldwide with mixed results.
5,000 of the 38,000 screens in the US and Canada can display the digital content. “As digital cinema starts to roll out in a big way over the next couple of years, you’re going to see so many new applications. Just as people are pounding the table for 3-D, ‘alternative content’ will be another part of the business,” Bruer said.

Disney’s October Blu-ray release of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ will use BD-Live to create a new interactive experience. New Blu-ray players can use BD-Live to download additional content of the internet. It will enable the Blu-ray release to adapt to local weather conditions and show customized video messages.
“Sleeping Beauty will revolutionize the way people will interact with and view movies in the home. We pulled out all the stops in launching this technology,” Bob Chapek of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment said.
Disney notes sentiments we saw earlier. Blu-ray is lagging behind expectations and even Blu-ray disc sales are down. They hope these interactive features will generate some positive buzz for the format.
Sony recently released Judd Apatow’s ‘Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story’ as one of the first Blu-rays with BD-Live.
