Indiana Jones not paying before $400 million

Spielberg Direct for Food

Before Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Harrison Ford will make some money on the new ‘Indiana Jones,’ the studio has to cover its $400 million in expenses the LA Times says. In recent years, more and more bigwigs have opted for a percentage of the earnings, instead of taking an upfront fee.

Paramount Pictures will have to make $400 million to cover its production and distribution fees. After that Spielberg, Lucas and Harrison will start making 87.5% of every dollar made, while Paramount will get 12.5%. Similar deals were made with Jerry Bruckheimer, Johnny Depp and Nicolas Cage on ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘National Treasure.’

Of course, we fully expect the new ‘Indiana Jones’ to make more than $400 million. These guys aren’t stupid. They will make 87.5% after that, $1 million per every $1.15 million. One of the main reasons they can do this is because Lucas owns the rights to these properties, while other movies like ‘Spider-man’ are fully owned by the studios.

Kaufman to have little Hollywood competition
April 18th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Charlie Kaufman Smile

While the US had a good presence at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, this year is turning out quite the opposite. Plagued by the writers’ strike, the only major Hollywood product in the competition seems to be Charlie Kaufman’s directorial debut ‘Synecdoche, New York’.

Spielberg and his gang will be there to promote the new Indiana Jones and Jack Black will do some promotion for Kong Fu Panda. But both aren’t in the competition. And as mentioned earlier, the show’s closing film ‘What Just Happened?‘ isn’t expected to impress anyone either, although the word is it has been cut by 8 minutes now.

Spielberg talks about the evil internet
April 17th, 2008 at 1:08 pm

Steven Spielberg Cry

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Steven Spielberg addressed the current info and spoilers on the new Indiana Jones movie.

“It really is important to be able to point out that the Internet is still filled with more speculation than facts,” Spielberg told EW. “The Internet isn’t really about facts. It’s about people’s wishful thinking.”

In which George Lucas responded that “it doesn’t make any difference. Jaws was a novel before it was a movie, and anybody could see how it ended. Didn’t matter.”

“But there’s lots and lots of people who don’t want to find out what happens. They want that to happen on the 22nd of May. They want to find out in a dark theater,” Spielberg said.

I’d say they can just not read it, Steven. Don’t you use spoiler tags?
