Germany not even interested in ‘Speed Racer’

Speed Racer NEIN!

I don’t want to keep kicking Warner Bros. when they’re down, but this is quite remarkable. It isn’t a secret ‘Speed Racer’ is turning out to be the biggest flop of the year. Warner tried to cover it up in the weekend by releasing numbers that were just a tiny bit higher than ‘What Happens in Vegas.’ And while it got them the second place in most news papers, the shame of the corrected numbers after the weekend must have stung pretty bad.

Now the news comes out about Germany totally lacking interest in the movie. You would ask yourself why they would care about Germany. Well, first of all, it’s one of the biggest markets in Europe. And secondly, the press was all over the movie in Germany, because it was shot in Studio Babelsberg near Berlin and partially financed by German film grants.

‘Speed Racer’ only managed to make a meager $154,745, with under 15,000 viewers, while ‘What Happens in Vegas’ topped the chart with $1,903,364. ‘Iron Man’ took the third place with $1,114,164. ‘Speed Racer’ only made it to the 9th place, merely beating ‘Street Kings’ in its fourth week. ‘What Happens in Vegas’ had a good weekend overseas, topping in half of the European territories other than Germany.

Common signs for ‘Terminator Salvation’ too

May 6th, 2008 at 9:30 am

Common Terminator

Common, yes that’s it, just Common, has been added to the ‘Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins’ cast as well. While the shooting began yesterday, some parts were apparently still to be given away. The Ice Cube hater will be helping out John Conner, played by none other than Christian Bale, in the heat of battle.

Yesterday we said Chirstian Bale might be the movie’s only hope. But Paul Haggis, writer of a couple of Oscar winning pictures, has also been mentioned in connection to the film. Although only to polish the (then mediocre?) script.

Rapper Common has been acting for a couple of years now and had some ‘memorable roles’ in movies like ‘Street Kings’ and ‘Smokin’ Aces.’ He will have a small part in the upcoming ‘Wanted’ as well.

Sarah Marshall slowly storming UK box office

Forgetting Sarah Marshall UK

In another slow weekend at the box office, ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ took the top spot overseas, making an estimated $7 million at 1000 screens — yes, that’s $7000 per screen. Since the male nudity picture is launching in different territories during the whole summer, it managed to make this in only 9 countries. Leading the box office success was the UK, with $4.1 million during the weekend, followed by the second week in Australia with $1.6 million.

‘21′ is still doing well with $6.2 million and a $30.7 million total. ‘Horton Hears a Who!’ also made another $6.2 million, with a total of $127.2 million overseas. ‘Street Kings’ did $6.1 million, while ‘Fool’s Gold’ added $5.1 million to their total. And lastly, ‘The Spiderwick Chronicles’ is still pulling in some good numbers with $4.4 million for the weekend and a $81 million total overseas.
