‘Prince Caspian’ tracking indicates good opening

Prince Narnia Lion

‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian’ tracking numbers are showing potential. The family fantasy will open this Thursday and is expected to top the $65.5 million opening by its predecessor ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ in 2005.

The $100 million ‘Prince Caspian’ is particularly tracking well with women above 25, with 25% compared to 20% for ‘Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix’ last year. ‘Un-Aided Awareness’ is 11%, compared to 16% for Potter. ‘Definite Interest’ 42% compared to 48% and ‘Overall First Choice’ 14% for the Disney movie compared to 17% for Harry Potter last year.

With not much else on the horizon this weekend, I think ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian’ is going to have a very good start, with ‘Iron Man’ still following.

Warner naive about ‘Speed Racer’ tracking?

Speed Racer tire

Last week we already found out how the ‘Speed Racer’ tracking numbers indicated a miserable opening, but Warner Bros. doesn’t necessarily see it this way. They’re not only giving the funky movie a $6 million push in the UK, they’ve also planned a $100 million marketing campaign worldwide, in addition to $100 million in promotional deals with 53 partners like McDonalds.

In reaction to the low tracking, Warner’s marketing president Sue Kroll said, “We’ve been talking about this a lot internally. There is a disconnect between how people react to the film and what the tracking is indicating.” But there’s no question about the mediocre reception of the critics either.

‘Sex and the City 2′ definitely possible

Sex and the City The Movie 2

With ‘Sex and the City: The Movie’ tracking to be the hottest movie this summer, first talks about a sequel have begun. I feel like we could release a second movie just based on stuff that we’ve cut out of this movie,” Cynthia Nixon said. “We were [at such a] breakneck speed to get this first movie out, I don’t know if there would be a second one, but it’s not up to me.” And while this is true, if the forecasts are right, there will be a second movie, because when there’s money there’s a movie.

Last week Moviefone released the results of their survey with over 420,000 respondents. ‘Sex and the City: The Movie’ was leading this questionnaire with 32% looking forward to the movie. Very impressive for a movie that cost only $65 million to produce, compared to about 10 movies that crossed the $100 million this summer.

‘Sex and the City: The Movie’ will premiere in London, May 28.
